NEW YORK – Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued the following statement following a federal judge’s denial of a motion by Citizens United and Citizens United Foundation to prevent the New York Attorney General from enforcing his policy of requiring registered charities to disclose to his office the names, addresses, and total contributions of their major donors:

“Today’s victory over Citizens United reaffirms some of our most basic responsibilities in overseeing the nonprofit sector in New York State. Charitable donors, beneficiaries, and the general public deserve to know that we have the tools to ensure that charitable funds are properly used and can take action again dishonest fundraisers and solicitors. I look forward to continuing to enforce our charities laws to ensure that New York’s nonprofit sector – which is responsible for one in seven jobs in our State – remains the strongest in the nation.”
