A.G.'s Office, With The Niagara Falls Police Department, Will Offer Cash For Working And Non-Working Firearms At The Former Niagara Falls Police Department

BUFFALO – Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced that his office will sponsor a gun buyback in Niagara Falls on Saturday, June 6th, as part of a statewide gun buyback program in cities across New York State. The Attorney General’s Office will be accepting working and non-working, unloaded weapons in exchange for compensation on site. The event is a collaborative effort between the City of Niagara Police Department and the Attorney General’s Office.

“By encouraging people to voluntarily turn in their guns, we are removing dangerous and unwanted firearms from places where they can be stolen or otherwise misused. This program is a critical part of my office’s efforts to ensure that all New Yorkers are secure in their communities,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “Along with vigorously enforcing our state’s gun laws, this buyback program is an additional step we are taking to stop the gun violence that has plagued our neighborhoods.”

"I'm a hunter and a sportsman myself, but I've seen some pretty scary-looking guns turned in at past buybacks,” said Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster. “Believe me, I'd much rather see that gun there than in the evidence room after a violent incident on our city's streets.  That's why.  We're so grateful Attorney General Schneiderman makes it possible for this impactful program to move forward."

This Saturday’s gun buyback will take place at the Former City of Niagara Falls Police Department, located at 520 Hyde Park Blvd., from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M.

The Attorney General's office will offer money in the form of gift cards when a gun is received by law enforcement officers. Gift cards with the appropriate amount will be issued after each unloaded gun is received and screened by the officers on-site. Free gun locks will also be available for attendees of the gun buyback.

Guns must be transported to the drop-off site unloaded, in a plastic or paper bag or box. Both working and non-working firearms will be accepted, and there is no limit on the number of firearms an individual can return. Licensed gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for this program.

The Attorney General's Office will be providing the following compensation by gift card for firearms returned on site:

  • $25 for antique and non-working firearms
  • $50 for rifles and shotguns
  • $75 for handguns
  • $100 for assault weapons

Gun Buybacks sponsored by Attorney General Schneiderman’s office have resulted in 860 guns being taken off the streets of New York State. The Attorney General’s Office has sponsored at least seven gun buyback events since the fall of 2013.
